Opioid addiction and overdoses have had a devastating impact on communities in the United States during the 21st century. According to the CDC, nearly 500,000 people died from overdoses involving any opioid, prescription or illicit, between 1999 and 2019. In 2019 alone, preliminary overdose numbers suggest 90,000 people died from drug overdoses, a 29% increase from 2018.
